Liska’s Role in Jewish Spiritual Heritage

From the 19th century, Liska has served as a focal point of Jewish community and tradition. Thousands of pilgrims come annually to pay homage to Tzvi Hirsh Liska, also revered as Hershele Lisker. Liska contains over 500 Jewish historical sites, from cemeteries to synagogues, embodying a storied heritage. By the late 19th century, the Jewish population of Liska reached nearly 3,000, enriching its cultural environment. The influence of Liska’s heritage extends to nearby towns like Kerestir, shaping Jewish life across Hungary. Liska welcomes approximately 5,000 visitors annually, who come for its spiritual and historical significance.

Efforts to preserve Liska’s heritage are supported by both local and international groups.
